Denise Turner contacted Oak By Design after admiring many oak products seen on their website.
Living in a redbrick property on a York village’s Main Street, Deborah wanted to add more character to the front of her home, whilst also providing additional space when entering her home.
Her home had a lean to entrance that also incorporated the extended living room window.
Jamie Winspear, of Oak By Design, visited the property and came up with a design for a new glazed oak porch that increased the entrance floor area and gave Denise’s home the additional character she hoped for. She also needed the groundwork’s for the proposed porch, insulation of the porch area, an internal door and frame fitting, plaster boarding and some re-wiring.
Jamie provided a quotation, along with design drawings, which Denise accepted. They both discussed the proposed works.
With the ground works completed and the glazed oak porch manufactured, the Oak By Design installation team installed the porch, along with the other requirements.
An approved electrician, Jason at JH Electrical carried out the electrical work.
Integrated lighting was installed on the overhang area in front of the oak truss.
An oak door and frame, with full-length glazed unit form the front of the porch. The solid oak door has a multi-point locking system for security and pewter handle and letterbox.
The truss design has a main king post (central upright post) and 2 diagonal braces, all glazed with our unique glazing system.
The right hand side of the porch features 2 full length glazed units, and the left hand side features one, to fit in with the existing structure.
Oak fascia’s and soffits finish the porch and guttering fixed to complete the porch.
As the roof rafters are covered with insulation and ceiling board, on the ceiling of the porch, oak rafters were retro fit to give the entrance a cosy characterful feel.
The existing house roof had to accommodate the ridge and back rafters of the porch roof. New slates and ridge tiles finished off the porch, fitting into the new roofline.
The entrance to the home is now very characterful and has given the property an entrance to be proud of.
The new enclosed oak porch and the extra space it has provided, has given Denise just what she wanted and it’s safe to say she’s absolutely thrilled with it all!

However, there are distinct differences between green oak and air-dried oak that warrant careful consideration when selecting the appropriate material for building projects.
Green oak is derived from recently felled trees, retaining a substantial moisture content ranging from 60-80%. As this timber undergoes seasoning, which refers to the gradual drying out process, its moisture content diminishes. The visual imagery of water gradually evaporating from the wood aptly depicts this transformation.
In contrast to green oak, air-dried oak is cut into desired sizes and exposed to natural elements for an extended period. Oak by Design were extremely helpful at all stages of my project from helping and advising me to choose the most appropriate beam through to advice on fixing the beam. Ordered an oak mantle beam from Oak by Design and they quickly called to check the finer details. Unfortunatly, the beam was slightly damaged on arrival by the courier company. Oak by Design immediately arranged to have it picked by DHL, transferred back to Yorkshire from Kent, repaired and sent back within 2 days, with no quibbles. Found Oak by Design searching for a new front porch to replace a canopy and knew immediately that this was company for the job and I was not disappointed. I already knew what I wanted and Richard, very patiently, developed my basic requirements, with a number of iterations, into a full detailed design. As I live outside their site working area I decided go for supply only and to install the porch myself. It was delivered as promised and it looked great even on the pallet! It took me a while to fit but it was very satisfying and the result is fantastic. The quality of the aged oak and carpentry of the timbers is excellent. I’m delighted with the porch supplied by Oak by Design - it looks superb.

Oak by design were a fantastic company to deal with. They made us some treads for a bespoke stair case from large pieces of air dried oak. They were very thorough in making sure that they understood exactly what we wanted. They made excellent suggestions for small changes to our own design in order to produce a better finished product and to manage the cost. We were very happy with the treads when they were delivered. They look fantastic and fitted perfectly to the steel frame which was made by a third party. I could not recommend them more highly.

Oak by Design have made 2 oak framed rooms for us, sunroom at the front and and "moonroom" (photo) at the back which encompasses a shower room, work area and storage. A first rate service from start to finish. We've used this company in the past for our floor - 40 foot of solid oak! 2 beams and 2 RSJ covers. My wife and I recently purchased an oak porch from Oak By Design. We are delighted with the porch and it has been much admired. We did get some help assembling it but everything fitted together perfectly.

This is the second time that we have used Oak By Design for oak products and once again we weren’t disappointed. We recently ordered some internal oak doors and from the very start they were a pleasure to deal with. Joanne especially was extremely helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We were kept updated about the progress of our order. Unfortunately we needed to delay acceptance of the doors for a few weeks and Oak By Design happily agreed to store them in their workshop until we were ready for them. Firstly, the product quality was superb, a beautiful oak mantle piece for my fire place, gorgeous. The installation was quick, efficient and fitter very friendly. The price was very reasonable, actually very good value. But what makes it all SIX STAR, ( but we I can only give 5!), was the customer service. When walking in the shop I was perfectly attended to, I was given samples to take home and they remembered to call soma days later to see what I thought. Order to install time was very fast for such a bespoke service. My experience was world class, great to deal with a brilliant local/small business, I totally recommend.
