Stuart and Wendy Elsworth were in the enviable position of having Planning Permission granted for a new build house.
The property was to be in a lovely little farming community in a village in North Yorkshire, near Northallerton.
They initially met Jamie Winspear of Oak By Design at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show in Harrogate. Early the following year Jamie met them in the early concept stage to discuss design etc.
They wanted to incorporate oak roof trusses and a cantilevered oak staircase into the home but were not sure what or how to do it. An architect was in place, building control finalised and a structural engineer on hand.
Their new build home was a 2-storey building with a single storey link that featured a vaulted ceiling and panoramic views across the open countryside.
This was one of the main reasons the Elsworths chose this particular spot for their new home. On a clear day, they can see the White Horse at Kilburn.
Working drawings were created and on going collaboration with the engineer, contractors and architect worked seamlessly.
As well as the staircase, Oak By Design supplied and installed the oak roof trusses, purlins, eaves area, other oak features plus all the fabulous oak screens which enable everyone to appreciate the magnificent views throughout the house.
Roof lights provide even more light to flood into this special home.
The main floating oak staircase has created a superb focal point at the centre of the home. The open mezzanine area around the top, and glass balustrades, create a very open light modern area.
The areas at the top of the stairs have been finished in kiln dried oak to finish off this contemporary space.
The chunky steps, with stone walls to one side and fitted glazed balustrades to the other, topped off with a chrome handrail certainly look the part!
Installation took place during the following year with Jamie overseeing the project from start to finish alongside the Oak By Design team.
The team at Oak By Design's workshop in Tockwith make everything from scratch. Ordering bespoke items ensures their customers receive exactly what they want and that the fit is perfect. During installation it also means that the installation team, Billy and Ben, can change items if necessary or access the workshop to provide materials if any changes are necessary.
The images show how oak can be added to a steel cantilevered system to create an oak floating staircase.
Please note: Oak By Design worked alongside the steel manufacturer to create this effect.
The main oak steps are created using an ingenious invisible jointing system that is used on all their oak RSJ covers.
Should your project include such items, we would be pleased to discuss this further.
Moving into their new family home has been worth the wait for the Elsworths and they are thoroughly enjoying reaping the benefits of choosing the perfect site for their new home.
They enjoy inviting family and friends over for dinner where they can seat 12+ at the dining table.
The oak roof trusses in each room are amazing and the light and airy staircase has provided a quiet reading space tucked in the corner! This will be the Elsworth's final home and they concluded that it is everything they expected it to be.
