When Alison Flint was extensively renovating her beautiful Edwardian home in Harrogate, she went to Oak By Design. She was looking for herringbone oak flooring. It had to be engineered oak to fit over the underfloor heating she had just had installed on the ground floor of her property.
Oak By Design, at this time, had just started to provide a herringbone engineered oak flooring. This delighted Alison, as she had struggled to find what she wanted anywhere else.
Alison took a large sample panel home. She looked at it in the various rooms at various times of the day. It is a good idea to do this if possible. The lighting at various times of the days changes. After keeping the board for a couple of days, a decision was made; she chose the Smoked Tobacco, a lovely rich colour which was well suited to the period property.
Richard arranged to visit the Flints' home.
Alison wanted the herringbone oak floor fitting in the Cinema Room, the Sitting Room, the Dining Room and the Hallway - all on the ground floor of their home.
Richard measured all the rooms, and calculated the number of square metres required. When using parquet, or herring bone flooring, it is advisable to add an additional 10% to allow for wastage when cutting the boards.
He also needed to calculate the square metres required for a double border around the edges of each room. These were being laid from longer, planked boards.
Having the same flooring throughout, provides a clean, fluid finish and consistency. It links all the room to each other providing continuity.
To form a neat finish around the edges of the rooms, a double row of 175mm wide, straight boards created the tidy border required.
Nigel Blackmore, the engineered oak flooring fitter, installed the flooring.
Fitting into the bay windows and up against the fabulous period panelling in the rooms provided a very cohesive, professional, period look. Provisions for electrical sockets within the flooring were also made.
Oak By Design made three matching oak steps and nosing’s from the hallway to the kitchen.
To create the same colour as the flooring, they fumed the oak at their Tockwith workshop. This was then finished with a Tobacco stain. This again, created a uniform finish throughout.
Alison said…”we were delighted with floor and the authentic colour. The high-end engineered oak flooring was perfect!”
By finding Oak By Design locally, Alison managed to achieve the outcome she wanted. She used a local business. She could see a good sized sample of the flooring that she chose. She was able to take the sample home and see it in her home. Oak By Design also used a professional flooring fitter. Nigel has the experience to fit the flooring to the unusual shaped rooms in Alison's home whilst ensuring a quality, professional finish.
The specifications are that each stave (piece of wood) used was 700mm long and 175mm wide. The boards are all pre-finished, ensuring a quicker fitting time unlike unfinished boards.
However, laying a herringbone oak floor is no mean feat!
The finish used on the boards is Osmo Polyx Oil, which provides a natural, hardwearing finish. This exclusive herringbone engineered oak flooring is also available in different colours and textures.
