Fantastic contemporary engineered oak flooring

A number of years ago, Oak By Design supplied Stephen and Sarah Wood the oak flooring for their hallway in their lovely home near Harrogate.

Their detached stone-built home is relatively new, having being built in the nineties. However, a couple of years later they decided to build an extension along the back of the house. This increased the size of the original kitchen and made a very large kitchen/living area.

It was decided to incorporate engineered oak flooring throughout this area.

Stephen called into Oak By Design’s showroom to look at the various samples available there. He wanted something neutral and natural, that wouldn’t date and that was light and airy for their new spacious room, which looks out onto their family garden.

He took a sample of the pre-finished Chateau board in Natural. This board has a lovely smooth sanded finish. Richard then visited their home to take final measurements.

Whilst Richard was there, Sarah and Stephen enquired about replacing the pine and painted staircase. This leads from their hallway, upstairs and has 3 returns, forming a lovely galleried landing.

Oak By Design installed the flooring during the summer, once all the building work was complete. The team glued the flooring onto the newly installed chipboard floor. This provided a solid, sturdy feel underfoot.

As the width of the kitchen was over 6 metres wide, the fitters had to incorporate ‘expansion gaps’ within the width. Luckily, the fitters were able to incorporate these alongside a glass wall and under the kitchens’ central island.

Whilst installing the flooring, the team also replaced the handrails, base rails, and spindles on the staircase, and ‘covered’ the existing newel posts. The staircase is now contemporary with clean lines and ties in with the flooring throughout the house.

The flooring that Simon and Sarah chose was a lovely wide board at 225mm wide.

Now that all the work has been finished, they are absolutely thrilled with their new contemporary home with its family kitchen/living area and ‘new’ staircase.

Stephen added, “It’s amazing how it adds a great feeling of quality to the whole area. It is easy to maintain and will last a lifetime.”
