Claire and Rob from Cheshire had been searching the Internet for an oak porch manufacturer. They initially decided to contact us by phone in February to enquire about them and to see what the procedure would be to enable them to receive a quote for the production and supply of one for their Cheshire home.
On phoning they spoke to Amanda. Happy to help she explained that she would need basic measurements, photos of where the porch would be sited and contact details for her to action a quote. Amanda e-mailed a porch diagram, showing the measurements required, to Claire & Rob. Any questions at all and she would be able to help.
A few days later Amanda received a reply with all of the information, including pictures that she requested, and set about compiling the quote.
A 4-post oak porch on dwarf walls was the desired design chosen by Claire & Rob. It needed to be oak framed. They required an overall width of 2200m, depth of 1200mm and height of 3200mm. This would give a roof pitch of 37 degrees.
The posts cross sections are 140mm x 140mm and have the added detail of stop chamfering which creates a little more detail and softens the posts.
An option of oak under boarding for the roof was also supplied. This is panelling which goes on the roof prior to the roofing materials, so that when stood underneath the porch and look up the panelling is visible (also great for hiding any wires for lights which maybe fitted).
With the quote compiled, Amanda sent it over to Claire along with a guide to lead time for production. Claire asked Amanda to requote to include an additional 4 curved brackets to go on the side elevations and give even more character which she did and sent back.
With the deposit paid, confirmation of the oak porch order passed to Amanda. They chose to include the optional oak under boarding and the additional curved brackets. Claire & Rob felt these would complete the look of the porch.
A sales order confirmation and initial drawing for the porch was sent for approval. The drawing was confirmed as correct.
Amanda then transferred the porch drawing over to full working drawings, which shows everything in more detail including a brick plinth on the low dwarf wall. This allows the workshop team to work from them when producing the porch. The kits we offer can have a pitched or lean to design. The size can be made to order using seasoned oak, not green oak. Green oak contains more moisture and will move over time. The kits are comprehensive provide everything you need.
The production team set about making the oak porch kit in June, the key components as with all oak framed porches are planed, sanded and the posts fitted with stainless steel pins at the bottom so they don’t sit in any water and allows water to flow under (see photo above). The porch was finally finished with 2 coats of Osmo Polyx UV oil in natural (429)
Amanda received notification that the oak porch was ready and contacted Claire & Rob to arrange delivery to them.
The delivery booking confirmed for July 2021, via a local courier company who are part of the Palletways network, Claire & Rob waited eagerly for their porch!
The installation of the porch had a slight delay; however, it is now complete and looks amazing and really complements Claire & Rob’s beautiful home!
Oak porches are a popular addition to many homes, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. This article will explore the advantages of adding an oak porch to your home, focusing on three key areas: increased property value, enhanced curb appeal, and improved functionality.
One interesting statistic that highlights the value of oak porches is their ability to increase property value. According to a study conducted by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), adding an oak porch can increase the value of a property by up to 5%. This percentage may vary depending on factors such as location and size of the porch, but it demonstrates the positive impact that this feature can have on overall property worth.
In addition to boosting property value, oak porches also contribute significantly to enhancing curb appeal. The natural beauty and timeless charm of oak create an inviting entrance that immediately catches the eye. A well-designed porch not only adds character and visual interest but also complements the architectural style of your home. This attention to detail creates a cohesive look that appeals to potential buyers or visitors.
Apart from aesthetics, oak porches offer practical benefits in terms of functionality. They provide shelter from inclement weather conditions such as rain or snow when entering or leaving your home. Additionally, they serve as transitional spaces between indoors and outdoors, allowing you to remove outdoor clothing before entering your living area. These functional aspects not only enhance convenience but also add value by improving daily living experiences for homeowners.
In the realm of construction, the choice of timber plays a crucial role in determining the longevity and stability of structures. Two prominent types of timber used are green oak and air-dried oak. This article aims to explore the benefits associated with air-dried oak, shedding light on its superior qualities as compared to green oak.
One interesting statistic that highlights the advantages of air-dried oak is its lower moisture content. Green oak typically possesses a high moisture content ranging from 60-80%, while air-dried oak undergoes natural drying over an extended period. As a result, air-dried oak achieves a significantly lower moisture content level than its counterpart.
The reduced moisture content in air-dried oak contributes to its enhanced stability when used in construction projects. Moisture causes wood to expand or contract, resulting in movement and potential shrinkage over time. However, due to its lower moisture levels, air-dried oak exhibits minimal movement and shrinkage tendencies compared to green oak.
Air drying requires time for proper seasoning, which allows for gradual reduction in moisture content. On average, air-drying reduces wood's moisture by approximately 25mm per year. Depending on the thickness of timber, this seasoning process can take anywhere from three to ten years. The prolonged period ensures thorough drying, enhancing the durability and strength properties of air-dried oak.
