Some Oak porch research begins!

Brian wanted to create a warm welcome to his already lovely stone built home in The Cotswolds. He felt the way to proceed, would be to install an oak porch. After looking around on the Internet, he came across Oak By Design's Inspiration/Case Studies page. He was immediately struck by how lovely each oak porch looked.

The initial phone call was made to the Oak By Design office where Brian spoke to Amanda. He explained that he would really love to have a hipped porch for the front of his home.

Amanda took some details and e-mailed Brian with the information, which would be required for her to be able to issue a quotation. This included the dimensions of the new porch. He also sent a photo of the front of the house. Oak By Design offer an advice service along with the quote and design.

It's all about the planning and details of the oak porch

.

Brian replied, and gave all the measurements required. His porch was to have an overall height of 3 metres and width of 3.95 metres.

He wanted the door and frame of the house to be fully visible, so opted for the height to the front horizontal post to be 2.4 metres. The oak porch was to have just 2 front posts (and therefore no back posts). The 2 return beams at the sides were extended by 100mm to enable them to go into the house, providing stability for the oak porch.

The builder who was going to be fitting the oak porch was also extending the front paved area. The steel pins, which are at fit into the bottom of the posts, could be embedded into it. This enables the free flowing of any rainwater under the posts so they are not sat in the wet.

On receiving the information, Amanda set about doing an initial design for the oak porch along with a quotation. There were a few questions and decisions to be made regarding the pitch of the roof. Amanda explained the options and Brian chose the best design for them.

The choice was made for Oak By Design to produce the hipped oak porch. 3D drawings of the hips were issued and once approved they were forwarded over to the expert joinery hands of the production team.

All the oak was finished with 2 coats of Osmo Polyx UV Oil in 429 (Natural).

The result - A perfect porch for the home!

Once the porch was ready, Brian was contacted to agree a delivery date to his home. This was done via the courier service STS Palletways.

An extremely happy Brian phoned Amanda to say thank you to everyone involved. He also sent in the wonderful pictures on this article.

Oak By Design do agree Brian’s house certainly has a very warm welcome now!

Design Ideas for Oak Porches

Designing an oak porch presents an opportunity to create a striking and welcoming entrance to your home. This article will explore three design ideas that can inspire your oak porch project: traditional charm, contemporary elegance, and rustic simplicity.

One popular design approach for oak porches is embracing traditional charm. This style pays homage to the timeless appeal of classic architecture by incorporating elements such as intricate timber detailing, decorative brackets, and pitched roofs. The use of handcrafted joinery techniques further enhances the authenticity and craftsmanship of the porch. By opting for a traditionally inspired design, you can create a warm and inviting entrance that exudes character and nostalgia.

For those seeking a more modern aesthetic, a contemporary oak porch design may be the ideal choice. Clean lines, minimalist finishes, and sleek materials characterise this style. Large glass panels or glazing can be incorporated into the design to maximise natural light while maintaining a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. The juxtaposition of oak against other materials such as glass or metal creates an interesting visual contrast that adds sophistication to your home's entrance.

If you prefer a more understated look that emphasises natural beauty, consider a rustic-inspired design for your oak porch. Exposed beams, textured finishes, and earthy colour palettes contribute to this style's relaxed yet charming atmosphere. By using reclaimed or weathered oak in your porch construction, you can achieve an authentic rustic appearance that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. This design idea is perfect for homeowners who appreciate simplicity and want their porch to blend harmoniously with nature.

Green Oak vs. Air-Dried Oak: A Comparative Analysis

The utilisation of timber in construction is a time-honoured tradition, with oak being a popular choice due to its durability and aesthetic appeal. However, there are distinct differences between green oak and air-dried oak that warrant careful consideration when selecting the appropriate material for building projects.

Green oak is derived from recently felled trees, retaining a substantial moisture content ranging from 60-80%. As this timber undergoes seasoning, which refers to the gradual drying out process, its moisture content diminishes. The visual imagery of water gradually evaporating from the wood aptly depicts this transformation.

In contrast to green oak, air-dried oak is cut into desired sizes and exposed to natural elements for an extended period. This exposure allows for air circulation between the timbers, facilitating the reduction in moisture content over time. The pace at which air-dried oak dries out is captured by the evocative phrase "25mm per year," highlighting the slow but steady progress of drying.

Air-dried oak possesses lower moisture content compared to green oak due to its lengthy seasoning period, typically ranging from three to ten years depending on thickness. This reduced moisture content enhances stability and minimises movements or shrinkage associated with timber use in construction projects.

Understanding the distinctions between green oak and air-dried oak grants building experts invaluable knowledge when making material selections. By considering factors such as moisture content and stability, professionals can ensure optimal outcomes in their construction endeavours without compromising quality or longevity.
