When Yorkshire construction company, Jack Lunn, based in Pudsey, Leeds was looking for a reliable and reputable oak frame company, they approachedOak By Design as they are local.
Their new development site is in Ferrensby, a small village just outside of Harrogate, and Jack Lunn were looking for a mix of different style oak porches, along with oak canopies to complement the new builds.
A quantity surveyor from Jack Lunn initially phoned Oak By Design and spoke to Richard who took some preliminary details and explained about their previous experience working with home building companies. Oak By Design work alongside national homebuilder, Taylor Wimpey They are currently working on their ongoing development site in Clitheroe, Lancashire, and on their previous site in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
With a mix of detached and semi-detached houses being built, the designs had to complement the new homes and create a warm welcome, whilst also giving definite kerb appeal!
With the designs of oak porches and canopies discussed, the decision was made that there would be a number of different styles:
- a large apex style, and a smaller version
- a large double width 'lean to' style, and a standard and small version
- a 'lean to' style canopy
13 in total would be manufactured.
Once the measurements were sent through to Richard, he set about getting everything together, including a comprehensive quotation which was sent to Jack Lunn, and was accepted.
In the meantime, Amanda had started her employment at Oak By Design and given the project for the oak porches. A site visit to Ferrensby with the site manager Pete, and Oak By Design’s Richard, was arranged.
With hard hats and high viz vests adorned, photographs were taken of the part built homes and full dimensions were also taken so that full working drawings for the project could be produced.
Once back at Oak By Design’s showroom and offices, Amanda set about producing the working drawings for the oak porches and canopies and when complete these were sent over to Pete on site for him to check and get back to Amanda.
After a few tweaks the drawings were signed off and the production time was put onto the schedule to start in June 2021.
The production of the oak porches and canopies started, and staggered into 3 batches.
The company chose to have stop chamfering detail added to the posts, and everything supplied planed, sanded and given 2 coats of Osmo Polyx UV oil in the natural finish (ref:429).
When the required oak porches were ready, Amanda spoke to Pete and arranged for delivery from the Oak By Design’s workshop at Tockwith directly to the Ferrensby site via a local courier company.
Over the course of the following months Jack Lunn fitted the oak porches & oak canopies to the new builds as they were nearing completion.
The joiners and builders on site were very complimentary of the quality and ease of installation of the oak porches.
With the oak porches and canopies fitted to the lovely new homes we went to visit Ferrensby and take some pictures of the oak porches so it can be seen just how impressive they look.
Oak By Design agree on what Jack Lunn states on their website ‘Quality Built On Traditional Values."
Following the production and supply of the oak porches, Oak By Design are now receiving enquiries from the new home owners at Ferrensby who are impressed with the quality and craftsmanship and are now wanting further products such as oak pergolas and oak gazebos.
Designing an oak porch presents an opportunity to create a striking and welcoming entrance to your home. This article will explore three design ideas that can inspire your oak porch project: traditional charm, contemporary elegance, and rustic simplicity.
One popular design approach for oak porches is embracing traditional charm. This style pays homage to the timeless appeal of classic architecture by incorporating elements such as intricate timber detailing, decorative brackets, and pitched roofs. The use of handcrafted joinery techniques further enhances the authenticity and craftsmanship of the porch. By opting for a traditionally inspired design, you can create a warm and inviting entrance that exudes character and nostalgia.
For those seeking a more modern aesthetic, a contemporary oak porch design may be the ideal choice. Clean lines, minimalist finishes, and sleek materials characterise this style. Large glass panels or glazing can be incorporated into the design to maximise natural light while maintaining a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. The juxtaposition of oak against other materials such as glass or metal creates an interesting visual contrast that adds sophistication to your home's entrance.
If you prefer a more understated look that emphasises natural beauty, consider a rustic-inspired design for your oak porch. Exposed beams, textured finishes, and earthy colour palettes contribute to this style's relaxed yet charming atmosphere. By using reclaimed or weathered oak in your porch construction, you can achieve an authentic rustic appearance that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. This design idea is perfect for homeowners who appreciate simplicity and want their porch to blend harmoniously with nature.
Air-dried oak, a type of timber that undergoes a natural drying process, offers notable advantages in construction projects. This article aims to highlight the benefits of using air-dried oak and its superiority over green oak, particularly in terms of stability and reduced risk of movement and shrinkage.
One anecdote vividly illustrates the stability offered by air-dried oak. Imagine constructing two identical wooden benches, one made from green oak and the other from air-dried oak. As time passes, seasonal changes introduce fluctuations in humidity levels. The green oak bench absorbs moisture during humid periods, causing it to swell and potentially warp or crack. In contrast, the air-dried oak bench remains relatively unaffected due to its lower moisture content. This highlights how air-drying reduces the risk of movement and instability associated with green oak.
Research indicates that green oak typically has a moisture content ranging from 60% to 80%, while air-dried oak boasts significantly lower levels due to natural drying processes over several years. On average, air circulation aids in reducing the moisture content by approximately 25mm per year for exterior timbers.
In conclusion, when considering timber options for construction projects, it is crucial to recognise the superiority of air-dried oak over green oak regarding stability and reduced risk of movement or shrinkage. The anecdote presented above serves as a clear metaphor for understanding this distinction visually. Moreover, data points reinforce these observations by highlighting significant differences in moisture content between these two types of timber. By choosing air-dried oak, builders can ensure long-lasting structures that resist warping or cracking caused by environmental fluctuations and maintain their structural integrity for years to come.
