Simon Stewart contacted Oak By Design on the first day of the Covid 19 lockdown in March.
Looking for a glazed oak porch in kit form, he had struggled. He decided the only way to achieve what he wanted was to look at ordering a bespoke porch.
The unforeseen difficulties that may have arisen through the ensuing pandemic were at the forefront of both his and the Oak By Design team's minds. They agreed that Joanne would prepare a quotation for a supply only porch, and that both parties would cross whatever bridges necessary to supply a porch and for Simon to get it installed.
Simon had an old porch on the north facing side of the house he had bought a few years earlier. It’s measurements at 1400mm wide x 950mm deep were smaller than the porch he wanted. The existing porch had a leaded glass door, stained panelled sides and a rendered roof area. He wanted something more useful and attractive.
Simon knew what he wanted. He sent a list of his requirements:-
1500mm (deep) x 1800mm (wide)
The lower section of the porch to be oak panels.
2 glazed units to each side.
Oak boards to the underside of the roof
The roof to overhang the front of the porch
An oak door and frame.
He linked the porch from the Oak By Design Website that he liked the style of.
Joanne supplied a quotation for the above glazed oak porch and they agreed they would see how world events would unfold before going further!!
Joanne also supplied a drawing to show Simon how the glazed oak porch would look and to give some scale. After looking at this, Simon amended the overall height slightly to ensure that when he removed the existing porch, the new porch would cover all the existing porch markings on the house wall.
In June, Simon ordered the porch. The Oak By Design manufacturing production team had returned to work and Simon had managed to find a carpenter who would help him install the porch once delivered.
Prior to the start of manufacture, they ironed out the final details of the enclosed porch. The construction of the oak panels on the lower part of the porch was crucial, as they needed to be water -proof and to look correct both internally and externally.
Simon chose a black Gothic style handle and matching black letter box for the boarded door that featured a small leaded window.
He also asked if he could have the house number engraved on the door but there didn’t seem to be an obvious place for this. After some discussion, the glazing fascia on the right hand side of the door won! Everything was finished with 2 coats of Osmo Polyx UV oil
The porch was ready in August, but Simon had to await his carpenter installing the glazed oak porch, so Oak By Design stored it at their workshop until he was ready in September.
Simon and his carpenter installed the porch. Simon sent photo’s shortly afterwards saying “The path and surrounding area aren’t finished yet, but even without that, the porch has an imposing presence”
Double glazing, also known as a double glazed sealed unit (DGU), is a window consisting of two panes of glass separated by a spacer bar. The air gap between the glass panes is filled with an insulating gas, creating a thermal barrier that enhances energy efficiency within buildings. Green oak and air-dried oak are two distinct types of timber commonly used in the construction industry. Understanding their characteristics is essential for any building expert.
Green oak, obtained from freshly felled trees, typically contains a high moisture content ranging from 60% to 80%. As the oak undergoes seasoning, a natural drying process, its moisture content gradually decreases. Seasoning can occur through air drying or kiln drying methods. However, in this discussion, we will focus on air-dried oak.
Air-dried oak is cut to size and left outside to dry naturally over time. During this period, proper air circulation between the timbers aids in reducing the moisture content. On average, air-dried oak dries at a rate of approximately 25mm per year. The duration of seasoning for air-dried oak depends on its thickness and can range from three to ten years.
One notable advantage of air-dried oak over green oak is its lower moisture content. This reduced moisture level makes air-dried oak more stable and less prone to movement and shrinkage compared to green oak. Consequently, using air-dried timber in construction projects minimises the risk of warping or cracking due to changes in humidity levels.
Moreover, because green oak contains higher levels of moisture, it may continue to shrink as it dries out after installation into a structure. This ongoing shrinkage can lead to gaps appearing between joints or connections within the building elements.
In summary, while both green oak and air-dried oak have their applications in construction projects, understanding their characteristics is crucial for selecting an appropriate timber type based on factors such as stability and resistance to movement or shrinkage during use.

Oak by Design were extremely helpful at all stages of my project from helping and advising me to choose the most appropriate beam through to advice on fixing the beam. They were extremely patient with changes to my beam dimension requirements finally providing a solution to suit my project. They provided photographs on completion of the beam prior to dispatch to ensure that my requirements had been met. Found Oak by Design searching for a new front porch to replace a canopy and knew immediately that this was company for the job and I was not disappointed. I already knew what I wanted and Richard, very patiently, developed my basic requirements, with a number of iterations, into a full detailed design. As I live outside their site working area I decided go for supply only and to install the porch myself. It was delivered as promised and it looked great even on the pallet! It took me a while to fit but it was very satisfying and the result is fantastic. The quality of the aged oak and carpentry of the timbers is excellent. I’m delighted with the porch supplied by Oak by Design - it looks superb.

A first rate service from start to finish. We've used this company in the past for our floor - 40 foot of solid oak! 2 beams and 2 RSJ covers. Having lived with our porch for over 2 years I can honestly say it’s the best addition to our house we ever made. Not only does it look fantastic the quality is outstanding. I love that it keeps the mud out of the hall and provides a seating area to remove muddy boots.

Oak by design were a fantastic company to deal with. They made us some treads for a bespoke stair case from large pieces of air dried oak. They were very thorough in making sure that they understood exactly what we wanted. They made excellent suggestions for small changes to our own design in order to produce a better finished product and to manage the cost. We were very happy with the treads when they were delivered. They look fantastic and fitted perfectly to the steel frame which was made by a third party. I could not recommend them more highly.
I was sourcing an oak RSJ cover (circa 5m length) for my extension and found Oak by Design on the internet. All of the reviews I could were glowing and so I contacted them......And I'm so glad that I did. I first used Oak by Design in 2021 for a oak porch, I used them again 2023 for an oak pergola. Both times my clients have been Delighted with the finished product. Both times the product was delivered when stated, everything i needed was on the delivery. Oak by design listened to what I required for both jobs. When embarking on a large renovation project assembling the right team of skilled work people is vital. It involves the need for skill, imagination and trust. It was important to us to use a local company and Oak by Design seemed to tick the right boxes although we had not dealt with them or indeed heard of them before. We soon came to realise that the combination of Ben, Billy, Jamie, Matt and MIck ( listed strictly in alphabetical order ) was a great success. Oak by Design have made 2 oak framed rooms for us, sunroom at the front and and "moonroom" (photo) at the back which encompasses a shower room, work area and storage. Ordered an oak mantle beam from Oak by Design and they quickly called to check the finer details. Unfortunatly, the beam was slightly damaged on arrival by the courier company. Oak by Design immediately arranged to have it picked by DHL, transferred back to Yorkshire from Kent, repaired and sent back within 2 days, with no quibbles.
