Solution focused company needed for 5 oak trusses and more!

Mr and Mrs Ramsey were looking for a solution focused company and also someone to supply the all the oak for a proposed barn conversion. They were planning to convert this into their ‘forever home’ and therefore they did what the majority of people do – they scoured the internet!

They were impressed with the information they found on the website. Firstly, by the photographs of previous projects shown within the case studies section and also by their methodical approach in helping the customer.

Making an initial contact by email, the Ramseys visited Oak By Design's showroom and were definitely impressed. After examining and looking at the wide range of products, they decided they wanted to use Oak By Design to supply all their oak. Further more, discussions were had and after a visit by Richard Penny to their prospective home in the North East, full working drawings were supplied to the Ramseys and their builders.

The barn conversion would be truly impressive!

Discussions were had with Craig Kipling of Create Architecture and as a result the first delivery was made on schedule. This was the first of two phases of beautiful oak trusses and the first of many deliveries. In conclusion, over the next 18 months, they were supplied with a range of oak products including roof work, engineered oak flooring and oak doors.

The barn conversion required 17 oak kingpost trusses in total and some of which can be seen in the photos. Together with the oak purlins, these definitely provided the ‘WOW’ factor.

The oak kingpost trusses formed the roof on a ground floor link section and also in the first-floor bedrooms. Another key area was to ensure that the oak was well seasoned. This means the client didn’t have to worry about any excessive movement when the building dried out.

Traditional mortise and tenon joints and stainless steel threaded bar were also used. As with all structural work, there was a close relationship with both structural engineer and architect throughout the entire build.

Oak By Design also created oak covers which fit perfectly around the the ‘unusual’ cross shaped steel which gave the impression of an oak structural truss; another good idea. As can be seen in the photo (above – right hand side)

The oak trusses were finished with Osmo oil
