A Joint Venture for Cumbrian Neighbours

Terry contacted Oak by Design in March after seeing a oak porch on the @oakporches Instagram page that he thought was similar to what he wanted.

Terry, and his next-door neighbour Paul, had adjoining glazed porches on their semi-detached homes in a Cumbrian village on the edge of the Lake District. Both their porches were in need of replacement and they decided to replace them with an open oak porch, which would span both their front doors.

After having a chat on the phone with Joanne at Oak by Design, Terry then sent her a detailed drawing of the relevant measurements of his existing porch along with a photo.

Joanne and Terry chatted about the neighbours' options and then she supplied a quotation, which Terry and Paul accepted, and forwarded their deposit.

A detailed drawing of the porch was then provided for Terry and Paul to approve.

They had an existing 160mm thick concrete base in front of their doors, which they wanted to use, and they needed the porch to sit on this after they had flagged the area.

Once they confirmed the porch details, it went into Production.

Samples of the different oil finishes were sent out to the neighbours, and they chose the Osmo Polyx 420 Raw.

The lean to porch, made from finished timbers of 140mm x 140mm, finished with a stop chamfer to the edges.

The roof has a pitch of 25° which falls to the front of the porch which overhangs the tie beam by 150mm.

2 Curved oak brackets form the entrance to each of the neighbours’ part of the porch as they enter their gardens through their gates.

They took delivery of the porch in August 2019 and, between them, they installed it on their days off.

They finished the roof with complementary slate tiles.

The Oak Porch Verdict!

Thrilled with their new joint oak porch, Terry and Paul said:-

“People make nice comments on it all the time when they’re passing the house on walks out into the surrounding countryside.”

“We’ve been asked many a time for the details of the suppliers, which we always pass on with complimentary comments!”.

Terry supplied a Google review on Oak By Design:

One of the people who saw Terry and Paul’s porch was Russell from Durham who was out walking near their home. A few months later, Russell contacted Oak by Design, and a few months after that, he had an oak porch too!

Green Oak vs. Air-Dried Oak: A Comparative Analysis

In the realm of timber, green oak and air-dried oak represent two distinct categories with discernible disparities in their properties. This analysis aims to shed light on the dissimilarities between these types of timber, providing an objective evaluation of their characteristics and potential applications.

One fundamental disparity between green oak and air-dried oak lies in their moisture content. Green oak, freshly derived from felled trees, exhibits a notably high moisture content ranging from 60% to 80%. This high water saturation stems from the recent felling process and subsequent lack of adequate seasoning time. In contrast, air-dried oak undergoes a lengthier natural drying process facilitated by exposure to ambient air conditions. Consequently, it attains a significantly lower moisture content as compared to its green counterpart.

The seasoning process plays a pivotal role in transforming freshly cut green oak into more usable timber with diminished water content. As time progresses, the inherent moisture within green oak gradually evaporates through natural processes such as diffusion and evaporation. Conversely, air-dried oak bypasses this seasoning phase altogether due to its extended exposure to external elements during the drying period.

The variance in moisture content between these two types of timber has profound implications for their stability and susceptibility to movement or shrinkage. Due to its higher moisture levels, green oak is inherently less stable than its air-dried counterpart. It is prone to dimensional changes when subjected to varying environmental conditions such as humidity or temperature fluctuations.

In contrast, air-dried oak's lower moisture content renders it considerably more stable and resistant to movement or shrinkage under similar circumstances. This increased stability makes it an ideal choice for various construction applications where durability and structural integrity are paramount.
