Oak By Design had a call from Simon Downing for an oak car port or oak garage to house his pride and joy, a new car!
Simons property was a detached stone cottage with separate outbuildings and a workshop. Rather than wanting another building, Simon felt he had to create a shelter that portrayed a wow factor and at the same time a practical solution.
The plan was to complete a site visit as Simons property was very local to Oak By Design.
This revealed that the location of where the oak car port was to be placed, meant re-organised the design and dimensions due to on-site anomalies. Due to the footprint size, a larger oak timber measuring 190mm x 190mm would look proportionally better.
An oak car port would be the ideal solution. The problems Simon had were two fold. First, he needed to protect his car from the weather; especially overhead leaves and twigs from the trees in the garden. Second, the odd shape meant the footprint and design needed to be unique. It wasn't an off-the-peg oak frame that was needed.
After taking a site survey, drawings were produced to show the location and size of the car port. A few tweaks later, Simon was happy with the result. The oak car port required the roof element to be a softwood construction and to incorporate a loft hatch to storage above.
Supplied were six upright posts, a top ring beam and sufficient tongue and groove boarding to clad the outside gable end.
Another discussion concluded that six galvanised shoes were to be situated underneath each post. This means the oak is elevated from the ground and therefore any rain can drain away without it sitting in the end grain of the post.
A matching clay pan tile installed by Simons roofer finishes the oak car port creating a practical and visually stunning construction.
Using traditional mortise and tenon joints, the oak car port was given more rigidity using some curved oak brackets. These are a great feature from both a practical and aesthetic point of view.
The oak car port serves two main criteria, the shelter of Simons pride and joy as well as providing space of storage. This beautiful addition has also added much value to his home. What was once an used area, has become a focal point and feature Simon admires each time he goes to his car!
Simon said, ‘It’s great to have the extra space and storage. It was great to see the problem of used space and a dirty car be solved in such a clever and welcoming approach.’
The air-dried oak will naturally weather over time creating a characterful and useful oak building.
An oak car port is just one of many structures we are able to create. Offering a bespoke design, please feel free to contact us if your pride and joy requires a new home.
