Oak RSJ cover is perfect for this room

Paul Good and his partner Alicia run the exclusive country estate, Talhenbont Hall in Pwllheli, Wales, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as a bespoke wedding venue. The estate also offers self-catering accommodation for up to 40 guests.

Pauls family home, set in 100 acres of ancient woodland and gardens, dates back to 1607 and is the perfect place to hold a special wedding or event.

Paul, who also runs an activity park: https://www.dragonraiders.co.uk/ in Wales, contacted Oak By Design as he required a rather large oak RSJ Cover to cover an RSJ in their recently converted Coach House.

The Coach House operates as a bar area during their functions and has plenty of original character within the building.

The oak RSJ cover needed to blend with the existing old timbers, without looking ‘fake’ and yet create an impact in the fabulous building.

The finished cover would be nearly 6 metres long, with a depth of 400mm and a width of 600mm. Usually, an oak cover of this profile would look out of proportion, but in a grand room such as its ultimate destination, the aim was for it to look in synch with its surroundings.

Going from design to production

An initial quotation was sent to Paul, and once this was accepted drawings were sent out to clarify all the sizes. Photo’s of previously manufactured oak RSJ covers were also sent out to clarify and suggest appropriate shaping, colour and design.

The joiners chose characterful kiln-dried oak timbers for the cover. Timbers with plenty of grain patterns are ideal for larger covers, as they need to look as much like a solid air- dried oak beam as possible.

The whole of the oak RSJ cover was wire brushed to raise the grain and to add texture to the oak. A hand chamfer runs along the long edges and Osmo Polyx Oil, in Raw, applied.

As the cover was 6 metres long there had to be a join along the length. 4 Oak straps at 50mm wide were made and these became part of the design of the cover, whilst hiding the obligatory joint. Small oak pellets add interest and character.

Delivered on time

The specialist delivery company, STS247, delivered the cover early on a Tuesday morning in April and Paul’s team had the cover installed ready for a wedding on the Good Friday of the same week!

The photo’s show that the oak RSJ cover fits in perfectly with the other timbers and a rather fabulous bar area in this special venue.
