Oak Framed Orangery

Mrs Matthews contacted Jamie in April to request a quotation for a 2 sided oak framed orangery . Their home is in a small village between the city of York and the market town of Selby.

Jamie had known Tanya and her husband, Howard, for some time. However, they had met up more recently through Oak By Design’s sponsorship of Harrogate Town AFC, where Howard is Vice Chairman.

The couple had lived in their stone built, detached, property for many years, and knew just what it needed to enhance their lives! They wanted to extend their living space by adding an oak framed orangery which would adjoin their dining room and kitchen. By having a fully glazed building, with a lantern roof, the couple would have a light filled room in which to sit and enjoy their beautiful garden. They would be able to enjoy the garden all year round, whilst linking the 3 rooms seamlessly. Keen gardener Howard wanted to be able to sit and enjoy the fruits of his labour!

An architect friend of the couples had drawn up the initial drawings when submitting Planning Permission a few years prior. The oak framed orangery element of the build was to be approximately 4.2 metres x 3 metres. The total size of the room is larger as this includes bi-fold doors.

Jamie provided an initial drawing of the proposed orangery, together with a Supply Only quotation, and a link to our website showing a similar orangery previously installed on a client’s home in Harrogate.

The couple accepted Jamie’s supply only quotation, but then decided to enquire about having the Oak By Design installation team install the glazed oak framework. Jamie sent a quotation for that option too, and they decided to have the Oak By Design installation too.

The Oak Framed Orangery Fits Perfectly in the Garden

Production of the oak framed orangery framework started fairly quickly after everything had been confirmed.

The framework consists of 3 glazed units to one side and 2 glazed units to another. The 2 glazed units are adjoined by a bank of 4 metal bi fold doors in anthracite, to match the existing windows of the home.

A pair of oak curved brackets were installed on the inside of the oak framework to add character to the room. These can be seen on the photo’s below.

All the full length glazing is toughened, Planitherm, argon filled and double glazed.

The Beauty and Practicality of Oak Conservatories

Oak conservatories are a remarkable addition to any home. The combination of aesthetic appeal and functionality makes these structures an ideal choice for those looking to enhance their living space. This article aims to explore the various aspects that make oak conservatories so appealing.

One notable feature of oak conservatories is their timeless beauty. The natural warmth and elegance of oak create a welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that your conservatory becomes the focal point of your home. The intricate craftsmanship involved in constructing an oak conservatory further enhances its charm, making it a true work of art.

In addition to their visual appeal, oak conservatories offer practical benefits as well. The use of high-quality timber ensures excellent insulation, making them suitable for year-round use regardless of the weather conditions outside. Furthermore, the durability and strength of oak ensure that your conservatory will stand the test of time, requiring minimal maintenance over the years.

Another advantage provided by oak conservatories is their versatility. Whether you intend to use it as a dining area, a relaxation space, or even a home office, an oak conservatory can be tailored to meet your specific needs and preferences.

To conclude, choosing an oak conservatory is not only a wise investment but also an opportunity to add character and functionality to your home. Its timeless beauty combined with practical advantages make it an appealing choice for homeowners seeking to create a distinctive living space that stands out from the ordinary.

Green Oak vs. Air-Dried Oak: A Comparative Analysis

In the realm of timber, green oak and air-dried oak represent two distinct categories with discernible disparities in their properties. This analysis aims to shed light on the dissimilarities between these types of timber, providing an objective evaluation of their characteristics and potential applications.

One fundamental disparity between green oak and air-dried oak lies in their moisture content. Green oak, freshly derived from felled trees, exhibits a notably high moisture content ranging from 60% to 80%. This high water saturation stems from the recent felling process and subsequent lack of adequate seasoning time. In contrast, air-dried oak undergoes a lengthier natural drying process facilitated by exposure to ambient air conditions. Consequently, it attains a significantly lower moisture content as compared to its green counterpart.

The seasoning process plays a pivotal role in transforming freshly cut green oak into more usable timber with diminished water content. As time progresses, the inherent moisture within green oak gradually evaporates through natural processes such as diffusion and evaporation. Conversely, air-dried oak bypasses this seasoning phase altogether due to its extended exposure to external elements during the drying period.

The variance in moisture content between these two types of timber has profound implications for their stability and susceptibility to movement or shrinkage. Due to its higher moisture levels, green oak is inherently less stable than its air-dried counterpart. It is prone to dimensional changes when subjected to varying environmental conditions such as humidity or temperature fluctuations.

In contrast, air-dried oak's lower moisture content renders it considerably more stable and resistant to movement or shrinkage under similar circumstances. This increased stability makes it an ideal choice for various construction applications where durability and structural integrity are paramount.
