Ian was in the process of forming a Mediterranean garden at his York village home. Having bought the house 6 years ago, Ian wanted to make the most of the south-facing garden. The inherited garden didn't have a focal point. Having already built a pizza oven within the space he needed to build a garden, kitchen area and seating space around it.
He contacted his friend Rob at Aquascapes & Landscaping. Locally based in Wetherby, they deal with everything from small paving projects, to full garden makeovers including: landscaping, paving, fencing, installing pergolas and gazebo's, turfing, ponds and water features. They can even supply the fish!
When he told Rob of his plans, he recommended Lorna Batchelor, of Yorkshire Garden Designs to design the space and planting.
Lorna had also been recommended by friends and neighbours, so Ian was happy that he was in safe hands with someone, who, again, was local.
Lorna produced a design (see above), which Ian was happy with.
Lorna then recommended Oak By Design for the supply of the oak pergola.
Ian contacted Oak By Design in March 2022 with regards to the supply of the oak pergola. Speaking to Joanne they discussed timber section sizes and the overall measurements for the area.
Joanne provided a quotation and then an initial drawing. She also produced a number of options for the positioning of the horizontal timbers on the top of the framework.
The L-shaped framework was to form 2 distinct areas. One section is to sit over the seating bar area, next to the pizza oven. The larger section is to cover the kitchen area, complete with oven and fridge.
With the final design agreed, Ian paid his deposit in early April and ordered the pergola. Again, happy to be using a local manufacturer.
All the timber sections are 140mm x 140mm. The horizontal timbers on the top overhang the main framework by 140mm and have a shaped end.
Across the front of both sections, the frame measures 4420mm.
The timbers are all cut ready to install on site. All the timbers have 2 coats of Osmo's Polyx UV Oil in a Natural Colour (429) applied.
By the end of May the team had completed the pergola. Joanne arranged delivery for the 1st June to fit in with Rob and his team finishing the hard landscaping in the garden.
Rob and his team installed the pergola, with the aid of a genie lift, and fixed the posts into the ground for additional stability.
The Mediterranean courtyard garden, complete with a beautiful aged olive tree, was completed in early July.
Lorna's plans included a circular theme with a curved paved and block area, curved seating area, and curved raised beds.
The Mediterranean planting continues around the area behind the seating area.
Unsure on how to finish the seating area, a recent holiday to Greece decided it. The painted rendered seating areas found in homes and restaurants in the area seemed the perfect solution.
Ian and his family now have the perfect space to sit and enjoy their sun trap of a Mediterranean courtyard garden. The lighting installed throughout the garden provides the perfect sitting space in the evening too.
Ian described it as 'Fantastic, it's perfect!'.
