Oak Porch seen at the HBRS Harrogate

Oak By Design have exhibited at The Home Building and Renovating Show in Harrogate for a number of years.

Often potential clients are researching for future home building projects and it can be a number of years later that we finally see them again when they approach us when their projects are coming to fruition.

In June Miles Pote , a local based painter and decorator contacted us when he and his wife Katie were ready for an oak porch on their brick built home in a Ryedale village.

They had been researching Oak Framed buildings when they came across the oak porch on the Oak by Design stand.

Their existing front door is set back from the front of the house and this area is 1500mm wide and a porch would highlight the door.

They knew exactly what they wanted and Miles sent a drawing with all the relevant dimensions and design.

How the oak porch was ordered

Joanne sent a quotation for the 4 full-length post porch, at 2200mm wide, 1500mm deep and just over 3000mm high.
They wanted curved brackets on the front face, and sides of the porch.

The truss design they chose was a king post and 2 diagonal braces.

They chose to have the underside of the post roof boarded with oak, and picked the Osmo Polyx UV oil in Raw (429) for the finish.

They accepted the quotation and then Miles’ intended builder couldn’t then commit to installing the porch and preparing the paving at the front of the house.

Joanne recommended Jack Stout, a builder who has installed a number of Oak By Design’s oak porches. He was available when Miles needed the porch building so the porch was ordered, ready for Jack to install in August. The weather was amazing when Jack was installing the oak porch and often had a stream of people walking past the house keeping up to date with its progression.

The Verdict!

The porch has totally transformed the house according to Miles. In fact, he says the whole village loves it!

He said that they often have to pass on the details for Oak By Design as people stop to ask where they got it!

The porch looks really well against the contemporary wooden door and the French Grey painted windows.

Miles and Katie are now considering an oak framed extension on their home but they are also concentrating on a new business venture.

They are embarking on making their own gin from Achnaha, a Scottish village that is part of an extinct volcano on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.

We’re looking forward to following their progress as the business flourishes. In the meantime you can follow them on Instagram here

Factors to Consider When Building an Oak Porch

Building an oak porch is a significant investment that requires careful consideration and planning. This article will discuss three key factors to consider when embarking on such a project: architectural compatibility, planning permission requirements, and maintenance considerations.

One crucial factor to consider when building an oak porch is its architectural compatibility with your existing home. It is essential to ensure that the design of the porch harmonises with the overall style and aesthetics of your property. This can be achieved by selecting materials, finishes, and detailing that complement the existing architecture. By doing so, you create a cohesive and visually appealing structure that adds value to your home.

Before commencing any construction work on your oak porch, it is vital to research and understand the planning permission requirements in your area. Different regions have varying regulations regarding the size, height, and location of porches. Familiarise yourself with these guidelines to avoid potential legal issues or delays in your project. Engaging with local authorities or seeking professional advice can help you navigate through this process efficiently.

Lastly, it is crucial to consider the maintenance requirements associated with an oak porch. While oak is a durable material known for its longevity, regular maintenance is necessary to preserve its beauty and structural integrity. This may involve periodic cleaning, treatments such as oiling or staining, and occasional repairs if needed. Being aware of these maintenance tasks beforehand allows you to plan accordingly and ensure that your oak porch remains in optimal condition for years to come.

The Benefits of Air-Dried Oak in Construction

In the realm of construction, the choice of timber plays a crucial role in determining the longevity and stability of structures. Two prominent types of timber used are green oak and air-dried oak. This article aims to explore the benefits associated with air-dried oak, shedding light on its superior qualities as compared to green oak.

One interesting statistic that highlights the advantages of air-dried oak is its lower moisture content. Green oak typically possesses a high moisture content ranging from 60-80%, while air-dried oak undergoes natural drying over an extended period. As a result, air-dried oak achieves a significantly lower moisture content level than its counterpart.

The reduced moisture content in air-dried oak contributes to its enhanced stability when used in construction projects. Moisture causes wood to expand or contract, resulting in movement and potential shrinkage over time. However, due to its lower moisture levels, air-dried oak exhibits minimal movement and shrinkage tendencies compared to green oak.

Air drying requires time for proper seasoning, which allows for gradual reduction in moisture content. On average, air-drying reduces wood's moisture by approximately 25mm per year. Depending on the thickness of timber, this seasoning process can take anywhere from three to ten years. The prolonged period ensures thorough drying, enhancing the durability and strength properties of air-dried oak.
