It’s not often we have ‘ready made’ porches to sell directly to clients, as everything is made to order. Very occasionally, though, we do. A few years ago we had made a lovely oak porch for someone, and then their circumstances changed. We advertised the porch on our @oakporches and @oakbydesign Instagram pages and Laura saw the porch and contacted us.
Laura runs a holiday cottage rental business in the North Yorkshire town of Bentham, near Ingleborough, one of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks . Set in the countryside, in a very private position, the house is perfect for up to 8 people who what to enjoy the Yorkshire Dales and Lancashire coastline and surrounding area.
We spoke to Laura recently and asked her about the oak porch and her holiday cottage.
“When I was a child living in the village, I remember thinking ‘When I grow up I’d like that house on the hill’.
“Fast forward 20 years and my tenant, in a rental cottage I owned, gave notice. I was considering selling it to look for a larger house in the area to run as a holiday cottage let, and New Thornber came on the market for sale. It couldn’t have been better timing.”
“3 viewings and a house auction later, and I’m picking up the keys!”
The property, is a 15 minute walk to Bentham and a 5 minute drive to Ingleton. It was built in the 1970’s by the previous owners on what was believed to have been the granary of the Thornber Estate. The house hadn’t been lived in for some time and needed a full renovation.
Laura, together with her parents, did a lot of the work, bringing in tradesmen where necessary. A lot of the stonework to the house had been loose and had to rebuilt. Once completed, Laura felt that the relatively new build house was lacking character so she started to look into adding a porch.
She continued: - “I already followed @oakporches on Instagram for inspiration as I was thinking of getting one. When you advertised a ready-made oak porch for sale, it was pretty much the perfect size!”
The oak porch is 1800mm wide and 1400mm deep. It was designed to sit on a dwarf wall of approx.. 800mm high. It has 2 curved brackets to the front face, and 2 curved brackets to each side. Stop chamfers finish the edges of the oak posts and it was finished with 2 coats of Osmo Polyx UV in 429 finish.
Again, fate had stepped in for Laura!
We offered to make Laura a couple of oak seat tops for both sides of the porch. She chose to have the front edges engraved with NEW THORNBER and ENJOY THE MOMENT.
“My dad and I went to the local machinery auction sale and bought pallets of stone, matching as close as we could to the existing house to use to build the dwarf walls. Lots of measuring to get it precisely to fit the porch. I was helped by my Dad and brother-in-law, they lifted the frame up with the digger! I was 8 months pregnant so I couldn’t help with this bit - which made it even more nerve-wracking to watch!! The house and porch were pointed up together which also helps it look like it's always been there.”
“It's made a huge difference to the overall appearance of the house, it's a beautiful welcome for our holidaying guests. Perfect for perching on the walls for a brew with a view”
In the end Laura decided not to add the seat tops to the porch as she said it’s really lovely just to perch on the walls. She didn’t waste the seat tops though. She made them into kitchen shelves instead - which she just loves! These can be seen on white wrought iron brackets on the kitchen photo’s.

Oak porches are a popular addition to many homes, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. This article will explore the advantages of adding an oak porch to your home, focusing on three key areas: increased property value, enhanced curb appeal, and improved functionality.
One interesting statistic that highlights the value of oak porches is their ability to increase property value. According to a study conducted by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), adding an oak porch can increase the value of a property by up to 5%. This percentage may vary depending on factors such as location and size of the porch, but it demonstrates the positive impact that this feature can have on overall property worth.
In addition to boosting property value, oak porches also contribute significantly to enhancing curb appeal. The natural beauty and timeless charm of oak create an inviting entrance that immediately catches the eye. A well-designed porch not only adds character and visual interest but also complements the architectural style of your home. This attention to detail creates a cohesive look that appeals to potential buyers or visitors.
Apart from aesthetics, oak porches offer practical benefits in terms of functionality. They provide shelter from inclement weather conditions such as rain or snow when entering or leaving your home. Additionally, they serve as transitional spaces between indoors and outdoors, allowing you to remove outdoor clothing before entering your living area. These functional aspects not only enhance convenience but also add value by improving daily living experiences for homeowners.
Green oak and air-dried oak are two distinct types of timber that differ in their characteristics. Understanding these differences is crucial for anyone involved in the construction or woodworking industry.
When comparing green oak to air-dried oak, one can draw an analogy with the concept of aging wine. Just as wine needs time to mature and develop its unique flavors, green oak requires a seasoning process to achieve optimal quality.
During the seasoning process, green oak gradually loses moisture content through natural drying methods. This reduction in moisture not only improves the stability of the wood but also prevents excessive movement and shrinkage over time. It is comparable to how aging wine develops complexity while maintaining stability.
On the other hand, air-dried oak undergoes a different drying method. Once cut into sizeable timber pieces, it is left outside to dry naturally over an extended period. The exposure to open air allows for gradual moisture loss through evaporation, resulting in lower moisture content compared to green oak.
The metaphorical comparison between green oak and aging wine helps illustrate how both processes require patience and time for desirable outcomes. Just as aged wine showcases its refined qualities after years of maturing, air-dried oak represents a stable and reliable material due to its prolonged seasoning period.
In summary, understanding the distinction between green oak and air-dried oak is essential when choosing timber for construction purposes. Whether opting for freshly felled or naturally dried wood, each has its advantages based on specific project requirements and desired characteristics.
