The finishing touch for this new home.

After deciding on an oak porch with an engraved house name, James and his father visited the workshop & showroom of Oak by Design at Tockwith, near York. After seeing Oak By Design’s dedicated oak porches website online, they knew it was the place for them!

James was near the end of his project: – building his first home after living in a caravan. His father wanted to buy him an oak porch as a gift.

Richard, and Oak by Design’s new employee, Amanda, discussed sizes, design, and finishes with James.

Along with his father, he had already built the dwarf walls that they were going to install the porch onto, so it was the width, depth & height details that needed confirming.

After having a look around the workshop, and seeing products in production, James sent an e-mail to Amanda with all the information required, including a picture of the front of the house.

With all the details to hand, Richard set about doing initial drawings of the porch and Amanda compiled the quotation to send along with them.

With a few minor adjustments to the design, James signed off the porch design and it was sent over to production.

James’ porch featured a diagonal design on the truss, curved brackets to the front face, and stop chamfers to the main timbers. These add character to the beams and create a ‘finished’ look.

Stainless steel pins were also fitted to the underside of the posts. These sit slightly into the top of the dwarf wall to raise the posts so as not to be sitting in any water when it rains.

The porch was also given 2 coats of Osmo Polyx UV exterior oil (429) to protect it.

"Jay's Cottage" is engraved on the front of the porch.

Oak by Design finished the whole porch off with the engraving of the house name into the main tie beam, a complimentary house-warming gift from the team!

With production complete, once informed it was ready, James and his father came to collect it from the workshop at Tockwith. Once they got home, they set about straight away with installing it.

James is absolutely thrilled with the oak porch and engraved house name, saying afterwards “ I’d like to say I’m over the moon with it. It looks great and was very easy to install. Thanks again, and we will definitely be recommending you.”

Oak by Design would like to wish James good luck & many happy years in his new home!

Factors to Consider When Building an Oak Porch

Building an oak porch is a significant investment that requires careful consideration and planning. This article will discuss three key factors to consider when embarking on such a project: architectural compatibility, planning permission requirements, and maintenance considerations.

One crucial factor to consider when building an oak porch is its architectural compatibility with your existing home. It is essential to ensure that the design of the porch harmonises with the overall style and aesthetics of your property. This can be achieved by selecting materials, finishes, and detailing that complement the existing architecture. By doing so, you create a cohesive and visually appealing structure that adds value to your home.

Before commencing any construction work on your oak porch, it is vital to research and understand the planning permission requirements in your area. Different regions have varying regulations regarding the size, height, and location of porches. Familiarise yourself with these guidelines to avoid potential legal issues or delays in your project. Engaging with local authorities or seeking professional advice can help you navigate through this process efficiently.

Lastly, it is crucial to consider the maintenance requirements associated with an oak porch. While oak is a durable material known for its longevity, regular maintenance is necessary to preserve its beauty and structural integrity. This may involve periodic cleaning, treatments such as oiling or staining, and occasional repairs if needed. Being aware of these maintenance tasks beforehand allows you to plan accordingly and ensure that your oak porch remains in optimal condition for years to come.

The Benefits of Air-Dried Oak in Construction

In the realm of construction, the choice of timber plays a crucial role in determining the longevity and stability of structures. Two prominent types of timber used are green oak and air-dried oak. This article aims to explore the benefits associated with air-dried oak, shedding light on its superior qualities as compared to green oak.

One interesting statistic that highlights the advantages of air-dried oak is its lower moisture content. Green oak typically possesses a high moisture content ranging from 60-80%, while air-dried oak undergoes natural drying over an extended period. As a result, air-dried oak achieves a significantly lower moisture content level than its counterpart.

The reduced moisture content in air-dried oak contributes to its enhanced stability when used in construction projects. Moisture causes wood to expand or contract, resulting in movement and potential shrinkage over time. However, due to its lower moisture levels, air-dried oak exhibits minimal movement and shrinkage tendencies compared to green oak.

Air drying requires time for proper seasoning, which allows for gradual reduction in moisture content. On average, air-drying reduces wood's moisture by approximately 25mm per year. Depending on the thickness of timber, this seasoning process can take anywhere from three to ten years. The prolonged period ensures thorough drying, enhancing the durability and strength properties of air-dried oak.
