Although living in Leeds, Amy works near Skipton and, on her way to work, kept passing a house that she admired the porch of.
As luck would have it, she had reason to visit the house through work. As she was leaving she asked the owner about her porch and if she was happy with it and where she had got it from. Lisa, who runs the interiors company Fern and Foxglove and partner Andrew Green, who had installed the porch, told her all about it and that they were more than happy to recommend Oak by Design.
Amy’s partner Peter rang the showroom in August and spoke to Joanne and they discussed the proposed porch. At the time they had a large canopy over the front door that had railings around it. They wanted to remove this and create a welcoming entrance to their stone-built, detached home with an oak porch. Peter sent photos via email and Joanne then forwarded a quotation.
Amy and Peter then visited the showroom in Tockwith to look at the showroom porch, and to have a chat about the porch generally. Peter was installing the porch himself and wanted to check a few things out. Getting nearer to having the porch she had been eyeing up for some time, Amy was looking forward to delivery!!!!
After some amendments to the initial quotation, Peter and Amy decided not to have any back posts, as the depth of the porch was only 900mm and they felt it may look too bulky. The back of the return posts would fix into the house wall, but to create some detail along the side elevations they chose to have a curved bracket on both sides.
They also chose to have the front of the side returns standing proud of the front of the porch by 140mm. They also decided to have them shaped along the underside with a light curve to tie in with the 4 curved brackets on the porch.
The couple also opted to have oak boards for the underside of the roof. As they were replacing the outside lamp that was in the existing porch they wanted a fully finished look.
They ordered the porch, and then drawings were sent out for confirmation prior to manufacturing commencing. Peter had already built the dwarf walls, so when he received the drawings he checked the measurements off and confirmed them.
Delivery took place in early October, and it wasn’t long before Peter had installed the porch.
The removal of the old canopy, and the installation of their new porch, has certainly created the approach to their home that Peter and Amy were looking for.
Amy doesn’t have to cast an envious eye over Lisa and Andrew’s porch now when she passes by, as she now has her own!
Oak porches are a valuable addition to any home, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits. These structures serve as an elegant entrance feature that enhances the overall appearance of your property. Similar to a well-crafted piece of furniture, an oak porch seamlessly blends with the architectural style of your house, creating a harmonious and visually pleasing effect.
In terms of durability and longevity, oak is renowned for its strength and resistance to decay. An oak porch, therefore, offers exceptional durability that can withstand harsh weather conditions and other environmental factors. Its robustness ensures that you have a sturdy structure that will last for generations with minimal maintenance required.
Moreover, an oak porch provides practical advantages by offering additional space for storage or sheltered areas. Whether it is used as a place to store muddy boots or as a cozy spot to enjoy the outdoors during inclement weather, an oak porch extends the functionality of your home.
Furthermore, these porches can increase the value of your property due to their timeless beauty and enduring quality. Potential buyers often perceive an oak porch as a desirable feature when considering purchasing a home.
In conclusion, investing in an oak porch brings numerous benefits to homeowners. From its elegant appearance that seamlessly integrates into any architectural style to its durability and practicality, this structure adds value both aesthetically and functionally. Consider adding an oak porch to enhance your home's charm while enjoying its long-lasting qualities for years to come.
In the realm of construction, the choice of timber plays a crucial role in determining the longevity and stability of structures. Two prominent types of timber used are green oak and air-dried oak. This article aims to explore the benefits associated with air-dried oak, shedding light on its superior qualities as compared to green oak.
One interesting statistic that highlights the advantages of air-dried oak is its lower moisture content. Green oak typically possesses a high moisture content ranging from 60-80%, while air-dried oak undergoes natural drying over an extended period. As a result, air-dried oak achieves a significantly lower moisture content level than its counterpart.
The reduced moisture content in air-dried oak contributes to its enhanced stability when used in construction projects. Moisture causes wood to expand or contract, resulting in movement and potential shrinkage over time. However, due to its lower moisture levels, air-dried oak exhibits minimal movement and shrinkage tendencies compared to green oak.
Air drying requires time for proper seasoning, which allows for gradual reduction in moisture content. On average, air-drying reduces wood's moisture by approximately 25mm per year. Depending on the thickness of timber, this seasoning process can take anywhere from three to ten years. The prolonged period ensures thorough drying, enhancing the durability and strength properties of air-dried oak.
