Meeting Jamie At The Home Building & Renovating Show, Set The plans In Motion For A Stunning Oak Sunroom

The Home Building and Renovating Show (HBRS) in Harrogate, was the meeting place of Derek and Belinda Peters, and Jamie.

At the time, the couple were living in their ‘forever home’ in a village on the outskirts of York. A few years previously, they had bought a large, honey coloured, stone-built property in the same village for their ‘post forever home’. They didn’t want to move into the property straight away, as they wanted to extend the home, and they wanted to give it plenty of thought before they were ready to move into the property.

With only themselves to consider, now their family had left home, they wanted to make sure they ‘got it right’!

Visiting the HBRS gave them the opportunity to meet potential suppliers and to look for inspiration.

They met with Jamie, after visiting Oak By Design’s stand, and discussed various options of oak framed extensions, and other oak ideas.

Belinda, however, only had one main requirement! She wanted an oak canopy on the front of the house, as she felt the front of the house lacked ‘character’. Whilst speaking with Jamie she mentioned this. As she knew the build wouldn’t be for a couple of years, to ensure she knew it was going to definitely happen, she jokingly paid her deposit of £1 there and then!!!

They rented the property out for a number of years, whilst planning their new home, and arranging drawings and planning permissions etc.

When they were had decided what they wanted, they planned the works with Jamie, and a since retired architect, Stuart, recommended by Jamie

The main extension to the home would look like 2 side by side extensions on the back of the house. One oak sunroom would become the kitchen area, which would then lead, seamlessly into the second oak sunroom which would be the seating and relaxing area.

This can be seen on the photos below.

Bifold doors would allow the front of the kitchen to be open fully to the garden, and sliding doors would open up the living area to the garden.

Any entertaining done in the house would flow throughout the rooms and out into the level garden.

The couple wanted their new home to be bright and airy, with a fresh, modern look.

Glazed trusses on the oak sunroom, together with full height glazed units and Velux windows, ensured the building would receive plenty of light.

All the oak framework would be supplied with Osmo Polyx Protection oil - Clear Satin (420)

Jamie supplied drawings of the proposed oak frameworks and Derek and Belinda were happy with the design, and discussed having an engineered oak, herringbone pattern, floor throughout the downstairs of the home.

Jamie arranged for them to see samples of different finishes, colours and sizes

A detailed quotation was arranged for the couples’ requirements, which was accepted, and they paid their deposit.

The Oak Sunroom And Oak Canopy Are Installed, And They Transform The Home

The main oak sunroom was the first part to be installed by our installation team, who worked alongside the Parkins’ builders.

The oak frameworks included oak beams throughout the rooms, oak timbers around the Velux windows and oak covers standing proud of the tops of the oak framework to hide the window blinds, when not in use. Everything has a slick, yet homely finish, with fresh, modern touches.

Once the main oak sunroom was complete, the installation team installed the engineered oak flooring that the couple had chosen.

The engineered oak flooring was installed throughout the downstairs. They chose a herringbone stave of 120mm wide x 600mm long.

They chose the Kolonial finish, which has a brushed texture. The brushed finish highlights the grain of the wood, and gives a very textural look to the floor. The light catches the hard wax oil finish and the angled boards catch the light differently, providing a very characterful floor.

The Smoked Natural finish of the floor is a beautiful, warm natural colour. This tones well with the oak throughout the home, and the clients painted and wooden kitchen.

As for Belinda’s canopy. The pièce de resistance of their new home in Belinda’s eyes is her beautiful new oak canopy, above her front door. Together with oak shutters, on the above bedroom window, the home now has a characterful look which was missing before.

Belinda and Derek are absolutely thrilled with their new home, and as well they should be. Planning, and taking their time to ensure they thought of everything, has certainly paid off.
