Small oak porch request for gorgeous stone home

This may be a small, oak, open porch but it is perfectly formed and fits the space beautifully!

John Steel and his wife wanted a porch to add character to their converted, former workshop, stone built home in the popular West Yorkshire village of Boston Spa.

The house sits in a quiet cul-de-sac of just 2 homes near the river and is set back from the road. The front of the house is slightly angled and this is where the front door is, meaning the porch needed some tweaking whilst being fit.

John had heard about Oak by Design from a friend.

Bespoke designed oak porch produced for shape of house

Visiting Oak By Design at their showroom, John had explained the problem. Oak by Design helped John and his wife plan the design and measurements and supplied a quotation for the manufacture and installation of the porch.

John was happy with the details and an order placed.

After the porch had been built in the Tockwith workshop, Billy, Oak by Design’s Installation Manager, delivered the porch to site.

He cut the back post to fit around the angled stonework whilst installing the porch.

John also chose to have the underside of the roof boarded in oak boards. This is a purely personal choice and is down to aesthetics rather than practical reasons. Some people prefer to see the back of the roofing materials when looking up whilst in the porch, others choose the oak boards and some affix weather board and paint in an external paint, the colour of their choice!

These boards are an ideal way of hiding any electrical wiring used for lighting etc.

Simply perfect results

The porch has added dimension to the previously, relatively flat fronted house. It has created a lovely welcome to this historic building and frames the front door for guests.
It must be a noticeable porch, as over the years, Oak by Design have had a number of phone calls from local people ringing for an oak porch like ‘the one by the river in Boston Spa’.

Having a new look to their unique riverside property pleased John and his wife hugely, and they often have people asking them where they got their lovely porch.

Characteristics of Green Oak and Air-Dried Oak

Green oak and air-dried oak are two distinct types of timber commonly used in the construction industry. Understanding their characteristics is essential for any building expert.

Green oak, obtained from freshly felled trees, typically contains a high moisture content ranging from 60% to 80%. As the oak undergoes seasoning, a natural drying process, its moisture content gradually decreases. Seasoning can occur through air drying or kiln drying methods. However, in this discussion, we will focus on air-dried oak.

Air-dried oak is cut to size and left outside to dry naturally over time. During this period, proper air circulation between the timbers aids in reducing the moisture content. On average, air-dried oak dries at a rate of approximately 25mm per year. The duration of seasoning for air-dried oak depends on its thickness and can range from three to ten years.

One notable advantage of air-dried oak over green oak is its lower moisture content. This reduced moisture level makes air-dried oak more stable and less prone to movement and shrinkage compared to green oak. Consequently, using air-dried timber in construction projects minimises the risk of warping or cracking due to changes in humidity levels.

Moreover, because green oak contains higher levels of moisture, it may continue to shrink as it dries out after installation into a structure. This ongoing shrinkage can lead to gaps appearing between joints or connections within the building elements.

In summary, while both green oak and air-dried oak have their applications in construction projects, understanding their characteristics is crucial for selecting an appropriate timber type based on factors such as stability and resistance to movement or shrinkage during use.
