Oak Structures Required for the Outside of this Yorkshire Home

Living in a beautiful village on the outskirts of Harrogate, Stephen and Felicity Lonsdale wanted to upgrade the rather non-descript garage on their farmhouse home!

Phase 1

They had bought their property as a major renovation project in 2020 and had contacted Oak By Design during the refurbishment. They’d set their hearts on a few quality, bespoke oak structures for the outside of their now stunning home.

The first phase was a pitched roof oak porch and an oak framed walkway. The porch was to provide the perfect welcome, to their newly finished home, for family and friends. The framed walkway was to provide shelter outside the boot-room. The perfect place to put on wellies and drop the shopping off!

They contacted Jamie at Oak By Design, after he was recommended by friends in the village. He visited the couple at their home and they discussed their desires and requirements for the oak structures.

Jamie provided sketches of the proposed products, along with a quotation, and these were just what they wanted!

As well as the 2 oak entrance structures, they also discussed an oak pergola at the back of the house. The Lonsdales are fortunate in that their farmhouse is located on the hillside in the Nidderdale valley and the views from the garden and the house are stunning.

They required an outdoor structure to provide shelter and warmth on evenings where they could sit out and enjoy the company of friends and family, whilst admiring these views and hopefully enjoying the sunshine!

To ensure a dry and comfortable space, the pergola was designed with a lead roof, complete with roof lantern. This would ensure the area under the pergola would be kept dry, and light to make full use of the area, throughout the year, hopefully!

The oak porch, the oak walkway and the pergola were installed later that year.

Phase 2

In 2022, when the house was complete, and they’d settled in, they contacted Jamie again.

This time they wanted to have somewhere to shelter their cars from the Yorkshire weather, and a gym style room.

They had an existing, good for purpose, block and stone garage, but aesthetically it wasn’t in keeping with the house and its surroundings

They still needed to use their existing garage for storing all the garden equipment, and everything else that garages seem to be full of, but they wanted a ‘cars only’ shelter. They didn’t want to be able to see the existing garage though.

After calling on Jamie, and explaining their predicament, he helped them to design an oak garage that was sited in front of their unsightly one. However, it could still be accessed via the back of the oak garage by a pair of thick oak doors. Perfect!

To the side of the oak car garage and part of the main framework, they had a gym installed. With underfloor heating, oak doors and windows this would provide the perfect space away from the house to use the treadmill and weights.

The building is open at the front, perfect to drive into on an evening when it’s lit up, keeping the cars off the main driveway, whilst keeping them clean and dry.

The oak framework measures approx. 9m x 6m and is finished with oak feather edge board internally and externally. All of the oak garage has been finished with 2 coats of Osmo Polyx UV Oil, in the 420 colour.

The Oak By Design installation team completed the build just before Christmas of that year.

The Lonsdale’s very much enjoy returning home to see the beautiful oak garage instead of the tired, old one!
