Oak By Design recently sponsored a team at The Coniston Hotel, Coniston Cold, Skipton in aid of the Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice.
The Coniston Hotel hosts the Coniston Challenge Day annually, and the events include: Clay Pigeon Shooting, Land Rover Driving, Archery and Target Golf amongst others.
For the second year, at the event, Jamie (and his Oak By Design team) was hoping to regain the Clay Pigeon Shooting title from last year when they won.
Jamie’s invited guests this year were: Christopher and William Newton from Newtons Solicitors and Richard Smailes from FSS estate agents.
Jamie said that it had been another fantastic day, filled with lovely people who were there to enjoy themselves and to raise as much money as possible for such a worthwhile charity.
Although the team didn’t win this year, they came a respectable third out of 27. He will be there next year to enjoy another day, and hopefully come back in first place!
Harriet Wood, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder said:
“On behalf of everyone here at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, and members of the Challenge Committee, we would like to extend a very big thank you for taking a team at this year’s Coniston Challenge Day! Despite a showery start, we were blessed with great weather throughout and I sincerely hope you enjoyed the day.”
“Furthermore, I am absolutely delighted to announce that the event raised a huge total of £52,025.”
“This crucial funding will help us to be there for more patients and families across our local communities when it matters most – enabling them to spend their remaining days surrounded by love.
We simply couldn’t do this without your help, so once again, thank you for helping to make this event the huge success it continues to be”.
Oak By Design were recently announced as back of shirt sponsors for Harrogate Town AFC.
Earlier this week (July 2023), Jamie Winspear and Richard Penny were kindly greeted by Harrogate’s first Charter Mayor, Councillor Michael Harrison, Irving Weaver (the club’s owner) and Simon Weaver, the club’s Manager, (see photos) at the club. They received framed, named, football shirts from the club, – which we’re sure will be going up on their office walls!
The Mayor was pleased to attend the photoshoot, saying it was great to see local businesses like Oak By Design and Harrogate Town AFC supporting each other. He was also impressed at how well Harrogate Town AFC are doing at the moment, not only on the pitch, but within the local community.
Oak By Design have been match sponsor’s over the years, and have helped to raise money at several of their charity events during this time.
They are really proud to have the opportunity to be a shirt sponsor for Harrogate Town AFC and will support them in anyway they can.
Like many Harrogate Town supporters, Oak By Design are looking forward in continuing in league 2 and especially the Wrexham Match, in November, where they will be match sponsors and will cheer Harrogate Town on to victory.
Oak By Design will be soon announcing a competition for up to 3 people to come along to a match, where they will be hosted by Jamie Winspear, listen to the Manager, Simon Weaver’s, pre match Q&A and then have access to the hospitality area and enjoy the match.
We are thrilled to now be able to announce this officially.
This is the recent Press Release from Harrogate Town AFC:-
Harrogate Town AFC is thrilled to announce Oak By Design as our new official back of shirt sponsor, as we launch our highly anticipated new home, third and goalkeeper kits this Summer. The partnership marks an exciting chapter for our club, combining our passion for football with Oak By Design’s commitment to craftsmanship and excellence.
We are proud to display the Oak By Design logo on the reverse of all six of our 2023/2024 shirts, worn by our First Team, Women’s Team and U18’s Academy.
Commercial Director Jo Towler added “We extend our sincere gratitude to Oak By Design for their generous support and belief in our club. We look forward to showcasing our new kit, proudly displaying the Oak By Design logo, and embarking on a successful journey together”
Oak By Design are extremely proud to have their name on the Harrogate Town AFC shirts.
Over several years Oak By Design have followed and admired the club. Its ethos towards the team and the supporters is one of the many reasons Oak By Design didn’t hesitate to say yes to the opportunity to support the club further.
Jamie Winspear of Oak By Design said “We are delighted to be a part of such an amazing club that works extremely hard to lead the way in so many sectors. They support several charities and young children who love to play the game. The club is all about encouraging the family day for everyone to enjoy and be part of. We very much look forward to supporting Harrogate Town AFC, not just for this season, but hopefully for many more seasons to come”.
Richard Penny of Oak By Design went on to say “I spent many years living in Harrogate and was always a supporter of my local team. Now, many years later, Oak By Design have the ability to offer their support and sponsorship to such a friendly and professional football team”
We would like to take this opportunity to wish Harrogate Town AFC the very best in the upcoming season and beyond.
Raisthorpe Flyers, near Malton in North Yorkshire recently held a Charity Clay Day.
Jamie Winspear, who is good friends with the family at Raisthorpe, was asked to be part of the team to help organise the event, held on 9th June, which was held to raise funds for MND Association.
The day consisted of laughter amongst good friends, with a view to raising lots of money for the charity whilst having a super day out.
31 teams of 8 people, plus guests, attended the event. In the morning there was coffee and sandwiches on arrival, and then the teams set off to shoot as many clays as they could. All the teams then returned in the afternoon to the marquee, where they enjoyed a live band and a free bar, courtesy of Raisthorpe Gin, Timothy Taylors and Pol Roger.
The event was an unbelievable success, due to all who attended. Everyone dug deep, bought tickets and participated in the Charity Auction, hosted by the one and only Richard Smailes, auctioneer extraordinaire!
2 sporting legends were also in attendance.
Jamie Jones- Buchanan, English Rugby League coach, and former Leeds Rhino’s legend, was the guest speaker. He was extremely entertaining when he stood up and said a few words. He presented Jamie Winspear with a signed, framed shirt from the magnificent fundraiser, Kevin Sinfield for the help Jamie has done this year for MND Association.
Jamie Winspear said “Being part of the team to help organise the day was a privilege. Seeing everyone enjoy themselves on the day and then donate generously made all the effort everyone put in very worthwhile”.
George Digweed MBE, multi times World and European gold winning English clay champion, handed out the awards and made the day extra special. It was a true honour to have him there.
Huge and special thanks go to good friends:-
– David, Julia, Edward and Ollie Meadforth hosted the event.
– Charles Dent, from Timothy Taylor’s who donated the real ales.
– Jonathan Smailes for donating the Pol Roger champagne.
– Richard Smailes for being the auctioneer for the event.
– Michael White, from Berry’s Jewellers in York, who donated a diamond bracelet for the auction.
– Emily Smailes from Marketing Adventures, for her work on the day.
– Richard Parris, Development Manager of the MND Association, who worked hard all day with his team making sure people donated.
Everyone enjoyed a fabulous day and were pleased that all their efforts had raised over £55,000 for the fabulous charity.
Rudding Park (https://www.ruddingpark.co.uk/) in Harrogate held its second 10K multi terrain trail race on Tuesday 9th May 2023, after the success of its inaugural race in 2022 when funds were raised for The Queen’s Green Canopy.
Over 400 participants ran a route created specifically for the event, amongst the 18th Century parkland of the privately owned, luxury resort and raised a massive £4834 for charity.
This year they chose to support former Leeds Rhino’s player Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease (https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/Robburrowappeal) . Rob Burrow, and his family and friends, have tirelessly campaigned to raise awareness and funds to support families living with MND. Their efforts are nothing short of magnificent.
Olympian and ‘Friend of Rudding Park’ Jonny Brownlee set the runners off at the start line.
Jamie, and a few of his friends, made up some of the 400+ mixed ability runners. Many of them had never run 10K before, however, they all managed to complete the course.
Their efforts were worthwhile as following the race, participants and spectators enjoyed drinks and a hog roast in the fan zone by the finishing line at Rudding House, with its views over the Vale of York. D.J. Mark Green played on the balcony, helping to create a party vibe.
Well done to all the entrants.
On 23rd March 2023, Bowcliffe Hall’s Jonathan Turner, his son, and their friends set off on a humanitarian trip to Ukraine. The trip consisted of an ex NHS ambulance (kitted out for those who may need it) and several other vehicles. They carried children’s clothes, food, dog food, school supplies, medical supplies etc.
The convoy travelled from Bowcliffe Hall, Yorkshire via Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia in conjunction with @yorkshire_aid.
All the aid was unloaded with the Deputy of the region and the ambulance was taken to the front line.
Jonathan and the team started their return journey to the UK on 28th March.
Oak By Design and the team are proud to support this inspirational journey. If you’d also like to support, or would like more information on the background and details please see their Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/the-drivers-club-bowcliffe-1678372373730
Dragons Den & the Key Stage 1 pupils (Years 1 & 2) at Westfield Primary Community School in Acomb, York have had the rather marvellous topic recently – “We Are Chocolatiers”.
As part of this topic, the children enjoyed designing and making their own chocolate products. Handling food safely, understanding the importance of hygiene, mixing and pouring were all part of the learning process, along with plenty of spoon-licking!
For the Year 2’s they were excited to pitch their chocolate product designs in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event, held at the school.
Jamie Winspear was asked by a mutual friend if he would be one of the team on the Dragons Den – He was thrilled to be part of this great initiative. Together with representatives from other local businesses (Vintage Cash Cow and Digifish Film and Animation) they attended the event.
The children wrote, and performed persuasive adverts and created prototypes of packaging. They were then asked questions about their ideas and products. One product was chocolate filled with ice cream, which sounds delightful!
As well as helping the children understand about producing a product, advertising and marketing etc, the Dradons Den also built confidence their in public speaking.
Jamie was impressed with all children’s confidence on stage, and commented on how friendly all the children and staff at the school were.
The University of York provided the prizes and part of the overall winner’s prize was a copy of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
What a fabulous way to learn confidence building and a great introduction to running a business.
By giving the children the opportunity to think like entrepreneurs, they can start to create and develop ideas that can be presented in a convincing way.
Through the Dragon’s Den event, the children have been given the opportunity to hone their entrepreneurial skills and the support of local businesses and the University of York has been invaluable.
David Carter, our Production Manager, and his son, Lewis, one of our joiners, have been helping raise funds for local charity – York Against Cancer. David’s wife, Janine, is the owner of Status Hair Design in Acomb, York.
Speaking directly to the charity Janine said “2022 was a challenging year. It brought both sadness and happiness for me personally. I had so many people close to me diagnosed with cancer. Your charity helped them immensely. I wanted to give something back by raising funds for you”.
The family decided to raise the funds by making and selling Seasonal Wooden Trees.
David had made an oak tree, from oak offcuts, for Janine to use in the salon a few years ago. Janine decorated the tree according to the seasons and holidays: – Valentine’s Day, Spring, Christmas, Easter, Halloween etc…
Clients were often asking Janine where they could buy one from.
In October 2022, Janine told her customers that the Seasonal Wooden Trees could be ordered, and the word spread! David and Lewis made mainly 2 different sizes, 3 foot and 4 foot, and they were inundated with orders.
Working in their spare time, David and Lewis made the trees in the workshop at Oak By Design, using their oak.
David and Lewis set a date for last orders prior to Christmas, but as the orders kept coming, they couldn’t say ‘No!”. By the time Christmas 2022 arrived they didn’t want to see another Seasonal Wooden Tree ever again!!
They were, deservedly, extremely proud, as their marvellous efforts raised a fabulous £1,065 for York Against Cancer.
Janine, and her staff, continue to raise funds throughout the year for the charity by arranging coffee mornings at the salon.
Kevin Sinfield England and Great Britain Rugby League player has been running 7 Ultra Marathon’s in 7 Days.
He completed this epic 275 mile journey on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford, at half time at the Rugby League World Cup Final.
During the week Kevin wasn’t just running Ultra Marathon’s but was out raising more funds in the evening!
On Thursday 17th November, after Ultra Marathon number 5, Oak By Design’s Jamie Winspear, together with Mark and Alice Pepper of Sporting Connexions, David Adams, Martin Wolstencroft and Richard Smailles arranged a fundraising evening to swell the coffers of the MND Charities that Kevin has been running for in honour of his mate and former Leeds Rhino’s team -mate, Rob Burrow.
Emily Smailles, of Marketing Adventures, arranged the video’s and all the marketing of the event.
The evening was held at Manahatta York. Martin Wolstencroft, the bar’s founder, offered the venue for the evening. This enabled Kevin’s fabulous back up team of 20 or so to be provided with a marvellous meal after their epic day. Martin also cycled quite a lot of the route with Kevin and the team.
The evening continued with 120 paying guests, friends and associates of the organisers from York and Harrogate, listening to Kevin Sinfield talk about his efforts to date. He was blown away by the response he received when entering York earlier in the day and spoke about the brilliant team he had behind him supporting throughout the challenge.
Richard Smailles, from FSS Property in Harrogate, was the Auctioneer for the evening, auctioning 30 of Kevin Sinfield’s running shirts, which he had signed, for £375 each!
He then auctioned a couple of super prints of Kevin and Rob and these were bought by Clint Goodchild, the Chairman of York RLFC and Jamie Winspear.
Richard, himself, bought a signed shirt of Steve Cram’s. Steve had supported Kevin on his Day 2 ultra marathon earlier in the week.
Michael Ibbotson, of the award winning Durham Ox at Crayke, generously donated lunch for 20 people and Kevin Sinfield agreed to join the donors to talk about the fundraising. This raised an absolutely fantastic £15k! This was a joint bid including Oak By Design‘s Jamie, David Adams from Business Waste UK, and Tom Frank from Ice Cubed Property Finance.
Kevin spoke about his relationship with Rob and how proud he was that Rob had brought MND into the public domain. Because of both their efforts, and other’s such as Doddie Weir’s, this illness is now fully out there and the public are very much aware of.
Rob Burrow and MND almost go hand in hand now, after Rob has pushed on through talking about his 3 year illness.
David Dickson, the non-exec Chairman of St. Leonard’s Hospice in York, and supporter of Kevin’s fundraising, speaking on the video (hear this above) called for both Rob and Kevin to be the BBC’s Sports Personality’s of the Year.
At the time of writing this the total raised for the 7 Ultra Marathons in 7 Days had raised a fabulous £2,000,000+.
£77,000 of this was raised at the York evening and thanks go to many very generous donors (2 donating a substantial amount each and wish to remain anonymous) who enabled this amount to be raised.
The people of York and Harrogate and the surrounding areas who have supported Kevin along the route, and who turned out in the foul weather on Thursday, have certainly helped Kevin raise this magnificent amount.
If you would like to donate please see Kevin Sinfield’s page here:
Jamie said afterwards “we are overwhelmed by the number of people who have contributed both time and money to make this evening the success that it was. The people of York and Harrogate have once again come out, in their support of Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrows on their journey to raise funds to find a cure for MND.”
Oak By Design was proud to enter a team at the Annual Charity Golf Day fundraiser for Harrogate based charity, Henshaws https://www.henshaws.org.uk a few weeks ago.
Jamie, and 3 friends, formed one of the 22 teams (the largest number ever) from the North of England who entered, at Rudding Park in Harrogate.
The day started with bacon sandwiches and coffee at the clubhouse and finished with a BBQ.
Henshaw’s charity supports people living with sight loss, and other disabilities, to go beyond their expectations. They run a bespoke campus college in Harrogate, which offers day and residential places for young people between 16 years and 25 years with Special Educational Needs and disabilities.
They also have an Arts and Crafts Centre in Knaresborough with a shop, café and gardens.
The day was a great success. The weather was beautiful, and the charity raised over £15,000!
Oak By Design team member, Leigh Skinner (pictured), also won one of the 4 prizes up for grabs! He won ‘The Longest Drive’ – so a great success all round.
The top (main) photo shows from L to R:- Johnny Smailes (Pol Roger), Leigh Skinner (prospect Health), Jamie Winspear (OBD), Steve Moss-Blundell (Cardale Financial Planner).
Oak By Design were proud to be the match sponsors at Harrogate Town Football Club on the 15th of this month for the Harrogate Town FC v Hartlepool United FC match at the Harrogate EnviroVent Stadium.
Harrogate FC were in need of a good win to get them back up the table and they delivered with a thrilling 2-1 win, with goals by Alex Pattison and Jack Muldoon.
Jamie Winspear of Oak By Design invited 9 guests to enjoy the hospitality at Harrogate Town FC.
Jamie said…
‘”Thank you to HTFC for making my guests and I feel welcome. The hospitality provided was excellent. Simon Weaver the manager, made the time to speak to my guests. Selecting the ‘Man of the Match’ was a tough decision as all the team played well, however Joshua Falkingham for me, was the outstanding player and deserved the bottle of champagne.
It was lovely to be able to introduce my friend’s son, Edward Newall, to Gary Pallister, the former English professional footballer who was there to watch the match.'”
Oak By Design wish all players the best for the rest of the season and we look forward to supporting them further next year. (Watch this space!)
Oak By Design kick started the New Year by hosting a fantastic evening Casino Event at their Tockwith showroom.
The aim was to raise money for St Leonards Hospice, their Charity for 2022.
It was the ideal event to start 2022, celebrating with friends and colleagues, whilst raising funds for this worthwhile charity. Oak By Design were pleased to share the evening with VA Heritage, an amazing Interior Design company based in Leeds, and Marketing Adventures, a digital marketing company based in Harrogate – all companies contributing to the evening.
The evening was aimed to bring like-minded friends together., drink a few glasses of champagne and promote each other’s skill set.
Oak By Design feels strongly about working together with other local businesses, promoting them and most of all building friendships along the way. In doing so, whilst raising money for amazing charities such as St Leonards Hospice, is an ideal solution!
The evening raised £400 for St Leonards Hospice and Oak By Design are looking forward to raising more monies for the charity this year through various different events.
Jamie Winspear would like to thank all the guests for coming and making the evening a great success.
