Multipoint Locking

Espagnolette or 'multipoint locking' systems explained..

Espagnolette Systems

The espagnolette offers an oak door and frame both security and long-term stability.  There are many types on the market, but not all espagnolette systems or multipoint locking systems are the same.

From the close-up image, you will see 'hooks' that appear on the top and bottom contact points.  On a UPVC door, this added engagement will keep the door secure.

However, on an oak door, this natural product will slightly move to acclimatise against the ever-changing atmospheric conditions. This is a normal and it will settle over time,

As such, the 'hook' shown would be a hindrance, and therefore all oak doors have a 'straight' shoot bolt to ensure the door and frame align perfectly and allow for some tolerance.

Engaging vs Locking

When closing the door within its frame, the uplifting movement of the handle will engage 3 (sometimes 5) points of contact between the door and the frame.

They are a central point near the cylinder (the actual lock) and further points, one situated at the top and another at the bottom.

This engagement will align the door within the frame at three points.  The door is NOT locked at this point.

To lock the door, operating a key within the cylinder will do this.  Note, you cannot completely lock the door unless the handle has been lifted upwards to engage all points of contact.

Key Features of Multipoint Locks

1. 20mm throw twin deadbolts.

High security nickel plated alloy deadbolts fully penetrate the keep rail and help prevent forcing apart of the sash and frame.

2. Weather seal compression adjustment in the keeps.

Together with the enhanced tapered deadbolt design, the adjustment in the keeps provides for low operating forces. With ±2mm adjustment it is possible to adjust for misalignment of the door during and after installation.

3. Heavy duty steel keeps

Heavy duty keeps manufactured using high grade steel, plated to comply with Grade 5 corrosion resistance requirement of BS EN1670 European Standard.

4. Latch and centre deadbolt

Engineered alloy sprung latch and nickel plated steel deadbolt provides the ThunderBoltâ„¢ with maximum strength in the centre of the door.

5. High performance gearbox

Tested to 100,000 cycles the sprung gearbox offers the lowest possible operating forces and helps prevent handle ‘droop’.

6. Cylinders and handles

ThunderBolt™ has been designed to harmonise with Winkhaus XR6-51 Kitemark profile cylinders (KM531333) and ArmorShield™ cylinder guard and to meet PAS24 security and durability standards. The locking System is compatible with industry standard handles and also with the Winkhaus Palladio™ and DDA handle range.
