Our Journey

The business was established by Richard Penny after deciding to go-it-alone.

His career history was varied, ranging from aircrew in the RAF to pizza maker!

The business originally set out to target the self build market promoting reclaimed products such as bricks, tiles and slates..

Our first employee and a change of direction in terms of increasing the product range to include reclaimed oak beams. 

Incorporation date.

The business was now, as it is today, registered as Penny Bricks and Timber Limited and celebrating over 20 years in business

A business decision was made to concentrate on oak beams and associated timber products. 

This extended to oak doors and fireplace beams.  Accompanying products were also added including skirting board and architrave sets.

Expansion plans of a larger workshop were put in place. 

Moving the business from Wetherby to Tockwith near York and creating a workshop that enabled expansion for the future years.

A new showroom in Harrogate!

Displaying our products in a retail high street store.  This encouraged passing traffic to see what Oak By Design was about.  Showing off more substantial products including oak porches and small buildings.

After six years, an "All under one roof" amalgamation of the workshop and new showroom was created.

A newly developed showroom was built next to the workshop extending the footprint to 10,000 square feet.

Huge expansion plans decided!

An investment was made to bring the workshop up-to-date.  Investing in modern woodworking machinery including a CNC machine capable of producing accurate and high-end products time after time. 

Oak By Design are at the heart of developing better strategies, increase a customer experience and expanding a more dynamic range of quality oak framed products.
